چکیده

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness among older people. It is important to identify modifiable risk factors which could prevent or slow the progression of this chronic disease. Dietary fatty acid intakes have been investigated in epidemiological studies as it is plausible that individual lipids have properties which modulate cellular damage in the eye. This paper reviews epidemiological studies investigating links between fatty acids and AMD. Mixed evidence has related the subtypes of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids to AMD, but nearly all epidemiological studies have demonstrated some level of AMD protection from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (particularly longchain fatty acids) and fish, with a tendency for a corresponding dampening effect with increased dietary omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Pilot study for treating dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with high-dose omega-3 fatty acids

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the primary cause of blindness in individuals older than 50 years of age. Studies were carried in patients with dry AMD using high-dose omega-3 fatty acids providing 3.4 g of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 1.6 g of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on a daily basis for 6 months. In patients with dry AMD, significant improvement in vision acuity occurred in 10...

Multivitamin-multimineral supplements and eye disease: age-related macular degeneration and cataract.

The prevalence and effects of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataract are increasing dramatically as the proportion of elderly in our population continues to rise. A multivitamin-multimineral supplement with a combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc (with cupric oxide) is recommended for AMD but not cataract. Weak support exists for multivitamins or other vitami...

Association between dietary fat intake and age-related macular degeneration in the Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study (CAREDS): an ancillary study of the Women's Health Initiative.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationships between the amount and type of dietary fat and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). DESIGN Women aged 50 to 79 years with high and low lutein intake from 3 sites of the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study were recruited into the Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study. Fat intake from 1994 through 1998 was estimated using ...

Evidence-based nutritional advice for patients affected by age-related macular degeneration.

This paper presents the evidence available in the literature on the role of nutrients in preventing the occurrence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its progression to more advanced stages. In our analysis we considered publications on vitamins B, C, E and D, carotenoids (i.e. lutein, zeaxanthin and β-carotene), Ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and zinc published between 2003 and 201...
